On 3rd November, 2007, a bunch of people who call themselves anak Bangsa Malaysia (SABM) organised a forum at the Dewan Sri Pinang. Malik Imtiaz Sarwar, Khoo Kay Peng, P. Ramakrishnan and Dato Seri Lim Chong Keat presented their views and answered questions from the crowd. Four major points were identified from the presentation of the speakers as imperatives if the concept of Bangsa Malaysia or one people, one nation is to become a reality :
- No more race-based political parties
- No more incompetence in Parliament
- Civil society taking ownership of governance of the nation
- No more racial delineation
First and foremost, i would like to applaud their efforts. On the last 16th September, the SABM initiative was formally launched whereat they made public the Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia Charter. But what baffles me is that the resolution reached by the Penangnites after listening to a prominent human rights lawyer, a prominent architect, an independent policy analyst and the president of Aliran, only managed to pull that up and this is what they made a charter.
No more race-based political parties : Yea, good idea. Is that enough? Or… are race based political parties the real problem? What is the point of getting rid of the political parties which merely depicts the general mindset of the population, when you have race based schools/kindergarten/ vernacular schools/ Universities, race based business association and even race based club houses, community centres, markets, eateries, newspapers, radio stations, movies, drama series and God knows what else. These education, economic and social institutions are what that actually influences the way people think, so why fry only the political parties. Also do note that most of the Penangnite who attended the Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia forum in Penang were of the English speaking, mainstream class who were mostly frequent English speaking non Malays. Typically they were lashing out at UMNO.
No more incompetence in Parliament : Wouldn’t that be nice, but what has the competence or incompetence of any parliamentarian got to do with Bangsa Malaysia or one people, one nation? I would suggest that there should not be incompetence amongst teachers, public servant, judges, enforcement authorities. Script writers, lyrical dealers, movie makers, media people, teachers, businessmen, publishers, these are the those who influence and constantly shape the thinking of the masses. Forget Parliamentarians, they are good for nothing but manipulating all parties for power and fame.
Civil society taking ownership of governance of the nation : One word…Brilliant!!! My standing ovation!!!
No more racial delineation: Easier said than done, lets first shut down our own races, education, economic and social institutions or open them up to other races, then perhaps we can talk about racial delineation.
To those at Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia, why dont you guys give the politicians a break and reflect on the real culprits. Hopefully you guys take this as positive criticism. We here at Diskopi support you in your endevours, but still it would be better if we were looking at the right direction in building Bangsa Malaysia.
