Dear readers, our writer Hariszuan also better known as Harisz has made an official statement late yesterday evening that he would be standing for the coming Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Campus Elections. Harisz a second year Political Science student has noted that his decision to stand for the elections is to change the perception of students regarding various issues. Among others he pointed out that the previous student council was doing nothing that they should be doing. Harisz deemed the achievement listed out by the previous student council a to be the duty of the University and not of the student council.
He said ” we are paying for all that infrastucture and amenitites, it is the responsibility of the University to provide us all that. Why does the student council have to ensure the Univerisity does it’s job? The student council is supposed to concentrate on the improvement of the students welfare and intelectual growth”. He also said that some of the efforts mentioned by the student council, was nothing more then mere rephrases, such as the college fees which has increased significantly over the years.
Harisz realised that he would stand a slim chance of winning as the University authorities have always favored their own candidates whom operate under the label ASPIRASI. When asked if he would be joining the Gabungan Mahasiswa (the opposition body in UKM), Harisz said that there is a possibility. Harisz also criticized the new pre-requirement that all candidates must have attended a program organized by the university in order to stand for elections. Harisz will be attending the program from the 1st of January till the 4th of January 2009. He also noted that there is something amiss with the way the university is rushing the elections after being silent for a whole semester.
When asked if it has anything to do with the upcoming by elections in Kuala Terengganu, Harisz said there is a probability. The nomination date is currently rumored to be on the 4th of January 2009. The oppositions in the University are very concern about the pre-requirement to attend the program which is said to be some sort of malicious attempt to identify the opposition candidates prior to the nomination date. As of now Harisz maintains neutrality and will wait and see what the program is all about.
Harisz also mentioned that he would bring about ideas that are consistent with the Diskopi’s constitution in upholding democracy, humanity, justice and rejecting all form of corruption and injustice. Hariszuan main concerns right now is in getting the attentions of the non-Malay voters and the first years. He said that it was crucial for students of all race and creed to realise that race based politicking is pointless and has to stop. Diskopi will be following close the UKM campus elections and will keep you guys updated on the happenings.
